PEBBLEDASH
2
The sequel to the greatest film never made
A short
chase film projected to be released in late spring 2004.
Pebbledash II is Montobronto’s latest project. A sequel to the epic
short film ‘Pebbledash’, which was scheduled to be completed
in October 2003.
Due to many reasons which will be revealed at a later date - the original
Pebbledash was never finished. Writing commenced soon after on a project
which would include the main character from Pebbledash, and many scenes
and situations taken from the original script, but we then thought - as
our basic plot is at heart a generic ‘chase’ film - why not
just make a straight sequel to Pebbledash?
A formulaic sequel can be a wonderful thing – adding nothing of
note to the world of the first, little if any characterization, and an
ignorance of the ‘spark’ that made the first one work. But
what you get is a concentrated version of the first in purely visceral
form. Any interests of character development are thrown out of the window
in favour of action and visuals. Audiences enjoyed the short car chase
in ‘The French Connection’? - then why not give them a chase
that lasts the entire last third of the film in ‘The French Connection
II’. Audiences enjoyed the car stunts in between the melodrama of
‘Smokey and The Bandit’? Then why not give them a soulless,
impersonal finale whose length is only matched by its destroyed-car count
in ‘Smokey and The Bandit II’.
This may sound dismissive of sequels, but it is in fact the opposite.
You have invested your precious time in the characters, following the
story arcs through their journey of the first film – now it is your
time to be rewarded - the second one comes along and is a running time
filled with action, excitement and NO exposition – it is the first
reduced to its most basic elements.
This was our intention with Pebbledash II – to make a completely
unambitious sequel, which magnified the central reason for the first and
multiply it by ten. The first one had a chase? This one IS a chase –
nothing else.
No exposition, no character building, no rounded narrative – what
you get is pure action from start to finish, which we hope will succeed
to be a very guilty pleasure.
Of course we hope to imbue it with a subconscious discussion
of the very notion of ‘sequel’ - first priority being to construct
a film to the template and form of what a sequel is, with a continuation
of a previous film a secondary concern.
And a few nods to all the ‘Beverly Hills Cops II’s that inspired
this film along the way. |
